A Weekend Getaway

This past weekend, we threw some things into a suitcase, packed up our beach chairs and headed up the coast to Maine to spend a few days at the beach. It was a much needed mini-getaway. With all the rain that we had been getting in New England, we needed to just get away. We spent all day Saturday on the beach in Old Orchard Beach, Maine and spent the evening walking along the pier, eating pier fries, yummy pizza, and riding the amusement park rides. Sunday was a little rainy and foggy, but we headed to Cape Elizabeth to check out the Portland Head Light, the oldest lighthouse in Maine and did some exploring along the shore. We also stopped to visit Lenny, the 1700 pound chocolate moose! Another evening spent along the pier, riding rides, eating, riding rides, and more eating. Today we drove back down the coast to Biddeford to the tide pools to do some more exploring. Emma had a blast climbing the rocks, looking for shells, and picking up snails. She even found a few crabs.

We stayed at a hotel that we will NOT be re-visiting again. What a mess that was. We had reserved a little 2-room cottage on-line, but when we got there on Saturday we were told that the cottage had been double booked that they were putting in a guest house across the house. Guest house was code for bed and breakfast that was not currently being used and was not suitable for a family with a toddler. There were glass vases, bookcases with glass doors, a door that didn't lock that led down steep stairs to the basement, a winding staircase leading to the 2nd floor. It was just NOT an ideal arrangement and NOT what we wanted. We spent 20 minutes saying "Emma don't touch that" "Emma, where did you go?" "Emma leave that there" when I finally said this was not going to work. However, the only other room they had open was a small tiny room with no TV, that was the size of a closet, but we took it anyways. There was no trash can, the door looked like someone had tried to break it down, there were fixings for coffee, but no coffee pot. It was bad. Our cottage was ready for us on Saturday, so we got in there for our last night, but it wasn't any better. The bathroom was gross, furniture was grimy. It was just blah. The thing is that the website was gorgeous and the outside of this place look really nice. Pretty white rocking chairs on the porches of the cottages, nice sign leading into the driveway, flowers. Yeah, pretty deceiving. It was a dive.

I will get some pictures up later. We had a great time despite the hotel fiasco.
